As a young man, one of my mentors gave me an incredible piece of advice; he told me to get a little bit better every day. I share that wisdom with every person in my life. I have built my life around that concept. I truly believe the implementation of his advice has made all the difference for me; I wouldn’t have been able to experience the consequences of getting a little bit better every day without the voice of a mentor in my life. One conversation is still having an impact 20 years later.   Mentors are incredibly important. In my book, Get Up and Grow, I talk about the importance of virtual mentors as you seek to grow spiritually and professionally. To understand the value of a virtual mentor, you must first understand the importance of mentorship in general. Mentors offer a fresh perspective, allow us to see our blind spots, and help us to evaluate what we are doing and the direction in which we are headed. Some mentors are lifelong friends; we see them, we speak with them, and we are able to receive feedback. Other mentors, however, have a different role in our lives. Virtual mentors, for instance, are not relationships that involve a great deal of personal or emotional investment. Virtual mentors are people who have the ability to speak into your life through technology. You may never actually meet, but you receive a quick, concise nugget of wisdom that urges you forward.   Your life has seasons. You move in and out of various circumstances all the time. Mentors provide consistency in the midst of these changes. They help you to remain grounded, open minded, and aware of the areas in your life that need attention. Isolation is detrimental to your success. The influence and guidance of other people will help you to work stronger and smarter. Invite others to speak into your life. You can learn so much from colleagues, leaders, and family, but sometimes it is helpful to have an impartial voice. A virtual mentor can be that voice. [bctt tweet="Mentors provide consistency in the midst of change." username="dukematlock"] The important thing to remember about mentors is that no two mentoring relationships are the same. Some mentoring relationships are driven by personal connections or friendships; others are simply voices in your life. You may not have a dialogue with your virtual mentor, but that does not mean you cannot grow from such a relationship.   Mentors are important because you need to invite other voices to speak into your life. Diversity of thought is imperative as you seek to grow. No matter what you do, the circumstances you find yourself in, or the challenges you are facing, a fresh perspective can make all the difference. True growth cannot take place in a vacuum. Growth, innovation, and success are dependent on a network of people. No one person can achieve greatness on his own; greatness is a result of community and diversity. [bctt tweet="No one person can achieve greatness on his own; greatness is a result of community and diversity." username="dukematlock"] I believe in the power of healthy mentoring relationships. I believe the can have an incredible impact on the way you live and lead. Like I said, the greatest piece of advice I ever received was to get a little bit better every day. One of the easiest ways you can do that is to invest in a mentoring relationship. It really will change your life.
