Most of us have the natural inclination to look towards the future. Dreaming and planning for the future, setting goals, and looking towards what is coming next are things that we all do. Making plans and looking ahead are good things; they push us forward and help us to reach our goals. But what happens when you are more focused on the future than you are on today? Looking ahead is a good thing until it leads to poor stewardship of the present. The future is exciting. It holds limitless possibilities and potential. But it’s important to remember that today holds just as much potential as tomorrow does and, as such, deserves just as much attention. This relationship between the potential of the future and the stewardship of today is one that requires a good deal of balance. If you are looking to find that balance, here are four ways to get started.

  1. Focus on your agenda.

Spend time revisiting and reviewing your plans for today. If you don’t have an agenda, now is the time to make one. If you can focus on what today holds, you will accomplish your short term goals and create the space for planning for the future. Remember that you cannot plan for tomorrow if you leave things undone today.

  1. Invest in yourself.

The person you are today will determine your success tomorrow. I have heard it said that your 20s determine your 70s. While we may not all be in our 20s anymore, we can still implement this principle. The habits you have today will be the habits you have later in life. Start becoming the person you want to be tomorrow today.

  1. Develop your network.

Your relationships play a crucial role in your future. The people you meet today and the relationships you cultivate will become the support systems, the connections, and the open doors of tomorrow. Spend time investing in other people. Give to others today so that you will have relationships to fall back on tomorrow.

  1. Dream for tomorrow.

It is important not to go to extreme ends of the spectrum while you are looking for balance. Be careful to avoid putting off thinking about the future in general; take the time to dream and plan for what is coming next! The future is full of possibilities, so set aside time in your schedule for look towards the future.
The future is a place full of possibilities and new beginnings. Tomorrow holds as much potential as you give it. Commit yourself to growth and personal development. The person you are today will determine the success you find tomorrow. Spend time planning for the future, enjoying today, and getting a little bit better every day. The future belongs to those who invest in themselves and invest in success. [jotform id=”51954776646168″]]]>
