I love talking to young leaders. With the exception of myself, my entire team is in their 20s. I coach millennials and spend time with young leaders that have a perspective that is completely different than my own. I enjoy these relationships because not only am I able to share my experience and wisdom, they are also able to share their innovative ideas and creative energy. I am a better leader because of the time I have spent with these young people. I truly believe that the greatest work flows out of diversity. The strongest and most effective teams I work with are those that include a variety of people. The marriage of the energy of young leaders and the wisdom of seasoned leaders creates a special environment. It’s an incredible thing. [bctt tweet="I truly believe that the greatest work flows out of diversity." username="dukematlock"] If the age range on your team is not diverse, bringing young people into the mix can be challenging. There are inevitable growing pains that come from making that kind of shift. But let me encourage you, the age of your team will have a direct impact on the atmosphere of your organization.  Organizations and teams that are young are able to innovate, create, and experiment. They find creative solutions to problems and discover new ways to accomplish goals. If that doesn’t convince you to add a few to your team, here are seven reasons why I love working with young leaders.

1. Boundless energy. 

I am always amazed at the excitement and energy that flows out of the young people I work with. They are ready to go and get things done! Their energy level positively impacts the various environments they find themselves in. That kind of excitement is contagious. 

2. Fresh perspective.

Simply put, they see the world differently than I do. Various perspectives allow the whole team to see a more complete picture.

3. Untainted by time and pain.

We are all shaped and formed by our experiences. The pain and hurt we face will impact the way we make decisions. Young leaders have been burned fewer times, which means that they are typically more optimistic. The lack of baggage they carry leaves them free to take risks and make decisions. 

4. They’re incredibly smart!

The generation coming into the work force right now is so much smarter than I was at their age. That intelligence is an asset to any organization!

5. Technology.

Theirs is the first generation that took computer classes in school and utilize technology in every area of their lives. This familiarity makes is so much easier for them to use technology in their careers. The world is changing and everything is digital; young people can help your organization keep up.

6. Incredible potential.

There really is no limit to what they can accomplish. With your wisdom and guidance on their side, they can tap into that potential and do something great. I don’t know about you, but I want to be a part of everything they are going to accomplish.

7. They inspire hope.

Spending time with young leaders makes me excited for the future. I have no doubt in my mind that the best is yet to come. 

Like I said, I love working with young leaders. My team is fun and creative, helping me to see things from a fresh perspective. I also have the ability to influence and guide them, which is an incredible gift. It is not enough to be great at what you do, you must also invest in the next generation.
