Great leaders aren’t just talented, they’re teachable. Coachability is the key difference between leaders who peak early and those who continue to rise. It’s a posture of humility, a willingness to listen, and an eagerness to stretch beyond one’s comfort zone. Leaders need voices who help them hear God’s voice more clearly. In a culture that rewards being right, coachable leaders choose to be refined.
The Windshield Wiper…
…doesn’t get noticed until the rain falls, but they keep you moving when visibility drops. Feedback does the same. Coaching reveals what self-deception hides. Invite Honest Input. Seek out mentors, peers, and team members who will tell you the truth, even when it stings.
The Thermostat…
… doesn’t match the temperature of the room, it adjusts it. Great leaders pause before defending. They ask clarifying questions and consider what might be true. Coachable leaders adjust and respond rather than react. We can’t fix what we refuse to acknowledge.
A Ship’s Rudder…
…is small, but when moved even slightly, it redirects the entire vessel. Minor adjustments create a massive impact. Apply this principle quickly and publicly. Show your team you’re not above growth. When you change behavior based on feedback, you build trust.
- Ask one trusted person this week: “What’s one thing I could do better as a leader?”
- Identify your defensive response—and replace it with one clarifying question.
- Share one recent growth decision with your staff to normalize coachability.
Final Thought
Stay a learner. Uncoachable leaders shrink the intelligence of everyone around them; coachable leaders multiply it. The moment we stop being teachable is the moment we stop being transformational.
