In 2016, 45% of Americans made New Year’s Resolutions. We can probably all guess the kinds of resolutions that were made; to lose weight, save money, quit smoking, or learn something new. Many of the most common New Year’s Resolutions revolve around personal investment and self-improvement. If you really think about it, it makes sense! The New Year is a perfect time for making a fresh start, gaining momentum, and starting over. A new year is a blank slate. I would argue, however, that a resolution isn’t enough to effect real change in your life. By definition, a resolution is simply a decision. While deciding to change something in your life is good, it isn’t quite enough. That decision must be met with action. After all, change can only result from action.   I believe there is a better alternative to New Year’s Resolutions. Instead of setting a resolution, set a goal. When you set a goal, you also develop a plan to get you across that finish line. Setting goals and developing strategies will take you further than any single decision. Goals are accomplished one step at a time. They outlast a single moment; they are objectives that, when accomplished, produce tangible results. The goals you accomplish become mile markers in your life. You can look back and track not only where you’ve been, but also where you’re going. You don’t have to wait to find out what your life will look like a year from now; you can set goals today that will create the reality you want to see tomorrow.   [bctt tweet="Setting goals and developing strategies will take you further than any single decision." username="dukematlock"]   Over the next four weeks, I’d like to spend some time talking about setting goals. We will focus on objectives that will take you to the next level in four areas of life: spirituality, success, health, and margin. If these sound familiar, it’s because they probably are. These quadrants are also addressed in my book Get Up and Grow: 21 Habits of Successful People. Spirituality, success, health, and margin come together to create a holistic picture of your life. Well-rounded growth flows from a balanced perspective. We believe setting goals specific to these four arenas will result in an overall increase in leadership and growth capacity. You won’t accomplish every goal in only four weeks, but you will have a strategy in place.   [bctt tweet="Well-rounded growth flows from a balanced perspective." username="dukematlock"]   We aren’t looking to create a laundry list of things that need to be done or add work to your daily responsibilities. We want to help you accomplish your goals in a smart, reasonable way. The first step to accomplishing that is to have a reasonable number of goals in mind. If you will set 7-10 goals for the new year, we believe you will experience growth like never before. That’s 7-10 total goals, not 7-10 goals for each area of life. That’s less than one goal per month! I believe that you can attain and accomplish the goals that you set for yourself this year. Let’s spend some time over the next four weeks discovering how to get a little bit better every day. I am so excited to begin this growth journey with you.
